2/12/2025 Alberobello, Locorotando & Matera Italy

Puglia region of Southern Italy

Greetings from beautiful and sunny Bari, Italy. TGC says driving and walking tours the next couple of days, as we explore the southern Adriatic coast of Italy.

Trulli style home.
Trulli style family complex. P.S. This complex is for sale if you’re interested.

We drove about 1 1/2 hours outside Bari. Believe us, driving in southern Italy is not for the faint of heart😬 Interesting area, very flat and the millions of limestone rocks have been stacked to create walls and basically everything!

The area was developed in the 1500’s to give peasants land, (of course the king kept 10% of the goods produced).

The original structures were built as “Dry stacks” or without any mortar so they could be quickly destroyed if the King was unhappy!

Now the buildings have been updated with concrete mortar.

Alberobello, the regions main city back in the day.
Village walkways.
Walking tour time says TGC🫣
Village views.
Trulli’s have signs on the roofs, mostly astronomical signs.
Parrocchia Sant’Antonio di Padova
Look, it’s smooth walking, up a hill 👍
Alberobello from the top, quite interesting.

Ok, short drive to the next stop, Locorotando.

Lovely views from Locorotando.
Chiesa Madre San Giorgio
Beautiful, Italy’s church’s are generally well maintained.
Beautiful small Village.
Spring in Southern Italy 😎
Beautiful and interesting day.

Ok, that’s day one of this tour, talk tomorrow! I got off easy, 14,000 steps and gentle hills😜

Day two! A little overcast today as TGC says, one hour drive to Matera and walking tour time😜

Matera from the top!

After one hour of crazy Italian driving 🫣 We arrived safely in Matera, parked the Trusty Citroen in an underground car park 😉 and away we go on the walking tour!

Piazza Vittorio Veneto

Matera is a very interesting city. It’s current population is about 60,000 but the interesting part is the old city, which started in Neanderthal times.

The Gravina River cut through the soft stone and Neanderthal man dug caves for shelter.
Over the centuries the city grew into stone buildings.
Early buildings (Sasso Caveoso).
Early Roman buildings
As the city continued to grow, the rich residents started to leave the valley and build on the plains where the current city is located.
Hand dug Cistern from 1500’s.

As the city above and below continued to grow, the rock buildings were starting to collapse.

“Newest” Old town (Sasso Barisano).
Stairs everywhere, TGC is a happy girl 👊
The old city became rundown and was closed in the 1950’s. The residents relocated to the newer neighborhoods.
But like all happy stories, in the 1980’s the government and citizens of Matera recognized they had a tourist attraction and started to revitalize the Old City.
Today Matera is home to Airbnb’s and small boutique hotels!

I’m sure it’s quite the happening place on the weekends and summers!

Wonderful time here in Puglia, lots to do and see!

Only 16,000 steps, but hundreds of stars and cobblestones 😬

We’re off to Lecce on the heel of the Italian boot! Until next time!

Arrivederci 😎

2/11/2025 Bari, Italy

Piazza Federico Secondo di Svevia (or Pasta Plaza), Bari, Italy

Greetings from sunny, but chilly 44-58 degree Bari Italy!

Beautiful Tuscany

We left Tuscany early on Saturday to make the long drive down the middle of Italy and then over to the Adriatic Sea side of Italy to Bari.

It is an eight hour drive on Toll roads to get to Bari (€60) from Tuscany! As we discussed earlier, Italian roads are “Under Construction” so quite a long journey!

Puglia region of Italy

You’re wondering “Where the heck is Bari”?

Bari is the chief economic center of Southern Italy. It’s metro population is 380,000 and is a huge port city. 1.5 million in the region.

Sunrise from our Airbnb, quite the Urban setting!
Our home the next 5 days, quite nice.
Lovely patio!

Bari has a long, long history, with history going back 5,000 years. It was a longtime Greek colony before the Romans and played a large role for the Allies in WW11.

After parking the Trusty Citroen in a parking garage, because street parking is crazy here.

Double park, sure, park in walkways, ok, why not park in the crosswalk 🫣

Very few motor scooters here, but it is the Smart car capital of Italy!

Ok, bright and early, walking tour time says TGC!

Bari is very flat and mostly concrete stones, so I think I’m in trouble 😬

First stop, bakery!

Fantastic bakery’s in town, most of them are Bars ( coffee shops) bakeries and what are called Focaccerias, where they sell various food from the region! Fantastic food scene!

Focacceria’s offering!

Moving on says TGC…

Statua di Nicole Puccini
Palazzo del Governo
Castello Normanno-Svevo
Pasta Plaza
Stadia delle Orecchiette (pasta street)
Beautiful pasta, and delicious!
Making the pasta!
Cattedrale di San Maria Assunta
One of the many streets of old town.
Typical street.
Piazza Mercantile…My View on the Adventure, following TGC😜
Lungomare (seafront) Imperatore Augusto
Piazza Mercantile
Lined out the door for Foccacia 😜

TGC was brutal, 22,000 steps on day one😅

Time for some of that Focaccia 😜

Day Two!

Corso Vittorio Emanuele 11

Ok, says TGC, easy day yesterday, driving, walking, picnicking in the park as we toured Alberobello and Trulli. More on that later. Time to walk! Here we go!

We’re staying right down next to Old Town Bari, so off we go to see if we’ve missed anything on our previous tours!

Fancy food store!

Bari is a great food city, very, very good food at restaurants and local food stores, no procrastinating says TGC, walk🙄

Teatro Margherita , Bari’s theatre.
Banca d’Italia
Teatro Petruzzelli

Walking along the waterfront now, not the most spectacular waterfront we’ve ever seen!

Adriatic Sea
Not many fishing boats!
Octopus anyone!
All we need is The Skipper and Gilligan! 😜
Back inland, through Old Town! Quite beautiful!
Alleyways, every apartment is full of people and it’s quite entertaining to listen to the banter on the streets and across the alleyways as people interact 😉
Local green grocers, with small shops in the alleys!
Beauty everywhere!
Now that’s the real deal!
Don’t know about you, but I’m hungry!
Focaccia on one side, Bakery on the other! It’s like paradise 😉
The bread they make here is called Pugliese bread! It’s crispy with a very crunchy crust and soft crumb. It’s one of my favorite breads in the world!
Make your choice 🤔
Tomato please, crispy, cheesy and salty, frankly delicious 😎
That slice didn’t even make it home!
Now that’s a lunch for the Patio on a beautiful day!

TGC says take the afternoon off, we need to get caught up on paperwork and laundry and I might Nap😉

Bari is a beautiful city, we heard very little English! If you want the real Italy, it’s here in Bari✔️

Day two of some driving trips tomorrow, stay tuned! Ciao!

2/7/2025 Tuscany, Italy

Panzano in Chianti, Italy from our Airbnb patio.

Greetings from beautiful and sunny, but a little chilly (34-58 degrees), Panzano in Chianti, Italy.

Our new balcony!

We made the four hour drive from Bergeggi, Italy to Panzano without any major issues. The Toll road through northern Italy to Tuscany goes through over 100 tunnels, and to say it nicely, Italian roads are always “Under Construction”.

Sitting room, in our Farmhouse.

We are staying in a large renovated farmhouse. It’s quite large, very Tuscan, and lovely.

We’ve been to Tuscany a few times and stayed in different locations. We stayed in Panzano in 2013. It’s very remote and has a nice, country feeling.

Tuscano beauty!

As we have visited the major tourist spots in Tuscany (Florence, Siena, San Gimignano) before, we’re going to stay low key, relax and visit some smaller places.

Entrance into Montepulciano.

First up, Montepulciano! We stayed here for almost three weeks in 2023. It’s one of our favorite city’s, small, with an authentic feel!

Montepulciano, a walled city with charming streets and piazzas!
Of course, we did a little wine tasting!
Our friend, Roberta, great Hostess!

Obviously, this is Chianti wine region! Hundreds to choose from! As always, we did our best to help the local economy.

Can we get that “to go”?😜
Driving tour time.

The roads in rural Tuscany are narrow and winding! But it’s the best way to see the out of the way places.

Pecorino Pienza

Pecorino Pienza is a sheep cheese made only in Pienza. We always buy some from the caseificio (cheese factory). Funny thing is, in the 12 years of visiting Tuscany, we’ve never seen a sheep 🤔

Tuscan Beef

All the fancy restaurants serve huge T bone steaks as Tuscan Beef. Funny, we’ve never seen a cow in Tuscany either 🤔

Greve in Chianti

Quick trip down the road, Greve in Chianti! A beautiful village that I’m sure hums in the spring, summer and fall, now it’s very quiet!

The black Rooster

The black rooster is the symbol of Chianti. The Knights of Chianti wore it on their armor during the Crusades! Now it’s the symbol of the Chianti region of Italy. Also on every bottle of Chianti Classico 😜

Enoteca

Wine tasting in Italy involves Enotecas, wine tasting shops that can also be restaurants. This one featured Wild Boar products!

Wild Boar Enoteca🤔

2/4/2025 Bergeggi and Genoa, Italy

Bergeggi, Italy

Greetings from the beautiful and sunny, but chilly 58 degree Italian Riviera!

View from our Airbnb. We’re way up the hill, spectacular place!

Firing up the trusty Citroen, we drove the six hours across France and back to Italy and the Mediterranean Sea.

FYI, tolls are brutal on Frances freeways, over $50 in tolls on the trip and fuel is $8 a gallon 😬

We are staying outside Genoa, Italy a place we’ve driven through before but have never visited! Let’s visit says TGC!

Genoa (Genova) is a very large city, the sixth largest in Italy! Over 1.5 million people live in the area. As it’s a very, very old city, the roads are difficult, but we decided to drive into the old town and park😬

City harbor entrance back in the day!

Genoa is a huge shipping port, with Italian sailors exploring and trading around the world from the city! Christopher Columbus was born here.

Genoa Harbor

Genoa also worked with Spain as a port and so it became a very wealthy city in the Middle Ages. The city’s architecture is quite beautiful and the old town, a little gritty as you can imagine in a seafarers city🤔

With the Citroen safely parked in a parking lot away we go!

Palazzo Di San Giorgio

Walking tour time says TGC😜

Genoa Old Town (Molo) is very compact, so we can’t be walking that much can we? Of course it’s hilly and cobblestones 🫣

Old town alley ways are very narrow, lots of street art!
San Pietro in Banchi

It’s still early and the crowds are light. Big cruise ship port in Genoa, I bet it can get really crowded 😬

Cattedrale di San Lorenzo (Duomo di Genoa)
Beautiful!
Focacceria

Focaccia is very, very popular in Genoa. There’s a Focaccia shop every couple of blocks.

Breakfast Focaccia, those French croissants are long gone!

Time to walk off the dough!

Palazzo Ducale
Torri di Porta Soprana
Caruggi Genoa
Ya, we’re back in Italy, scooters everywhere 🫣
Piazza Raffael de Ferrari
Porticos

Walking now, quickly!

Genoa, like lots of Northern Italian city’s has beautiful Porticos to walk under. All I know is you give TGC a smooth walking path like that, you better tighten the shoe laces😜

Mecato Orientale Genoa or MOG market.

You know we love the central markets and Genoa’s is first rate!

Interesting setup, the market is circular with a food hall in the middle. Fun place.
Italian artichokes, of course!
Green grocers, excellent produce.
Meats and specialty foods.
Bakery…we’re not in France🤨
Pasta of course…it is Italy.
Spices and herbs.
Food hall, restaurants line the Hall, fun place.
Lunch time!

Different Focaccia, not par baked long fermentation like other city’s in Italy. Fresh dough, cover with ingredients than bakes. It’s a little softer than we like. TGC says 6.8, Mike 7.2 🫣

Ok, back to walking. This is Via Giuseppe Garibaldi Street, where Genoas rich and famous lived.

Ok, that’s enough, 20,000 steps, lots of cobblestones and hills!

Sunset over Bergeggi.

Fun time here, heading to Tuscany and Panzano in Chianti next!

Until than, Ciao, Caio, Ciao from Italy!

2/1/2025 Uzes, France and Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Greetings from beautiful, but cold, wet and windy Uzes, France!

Our new home in Uzes, our Airbnb 😉

We’ve visited Uzes many times previously, it’s one of our favorite places! The weather is a little spotty, so some of the pictures are from previous visits😉

Cathedral Saint-Theodorit

We’ve talked about the Duche of Uzes, and why it’s powerful, but to Cindy and I, it’s the perfect French village. Small, fantastic setting and the weather in the south of France, the Gard/Provence is Mediterranean.

Tour de l’Eveque
Duchy d’Uzes

We love this area for many, many reasons…

Boulangerie 😜
The perfect French baguette✔️

You know I love French bakeries, and Uzes has some of the best in the world. Simple, local bakeries that bake wonderful and delicious baked goods. Also the Patisseries (desserts) are awesome here.

Patisserie, fine desserts
One of the many beautiful roads through Provence 👍
Florence, our wine guide!

We also love to visit Chateauneuf-du-Pape, one of the premier wine areas of the world!

View of the valley from above the Chateau. Beautiful!

Bring your own Jug!

Don’t think all French wine is stuffy, the majority of French people drink box or “House wine”. It’s €2 a liter, fresh from the Tap✔️

Uzes Saturday market

Uzes hosts a world famous Saturday market all year round, rain or shine. Today it’s cold, windy and rain on the way, but the market goes on! Because of the weather, some pictures are from previous years🫣

Bakery’s from around the area 👍
Charcuterie
Fresh produce.
Seafood
Of course, French chicken 😉
You must have a shopping bag from Uzes✔️
Charcuterie board? Made locally from olive wood 😎
Now that’s a French paella!
We’re in France, we must have a cheese course😬
Of course, you must stop by the Patisserie for a small treat 😉
TGC in shopping mode

Easy to see why people love The South of France, the lifestyle here is wonderful!

By the way, that villa that you dream of, here in Province, 4 bedrooms, remodeled and updated, pool, 4 acres of land $1.5 million 🤔

Au revoir from Uzes!

I got off easy in Uzes, only 16,000 steps per day! Another reason to love Uzes 😉

Headed to Bergeggi, Italy tomorrow, that’s by Genova!

1/29/2025 Toulouse, France

Basilique Saint Sernin

Greetings from beautiful, but a bit chilly, 52 degrees Toulouse, France!

Snow capped Pyrenees

We made the easy, three hour drive from Collioure, France to Toulouse and paid the €21 tolls. Fresh snow the previous night left the Pyrenees even more beautiful.

We visited Toulouse once previously and loved it so much we decided to return.

Old town Toulouse, classic French architecture.

Toulouse is an interesting city. It’s quite large, over 1.5 million inhabitants and the home of Europes airline and space manufacturing. Airbus is Headquartered here.

Us, we’re just there for the sights and the food😎

First stop after a quick metro ride, the Canal du Midi.

Canal du Midi

Built in the 1600’s the canal runs over 240km from outside Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea. It was once a super waterway for cargo, now it’s used for pleasure boating and Barge lifestyles.

Marche Victor Hugo

OK, we’re in France, home to, in my opinion, the country with the world’s best food! First stop, the world famous Victor Hugo Market, a fresh food market.

Boulangerie

Of course the first stop is at one of many Boulangeries, the French are the worlds best bakers 👍

Now that’s ciabatta bread👍
Wow!
Hurt me🫣
Fromagerie

Possibly, the only thing better than a French Boulangerie? A French Fromagerie, or cheese shop!

Individual cheeses
Wow, the French love cheese (me too😉).
Here’s the beef!
Where’s the BBQ?
Prepared entrees.
Seafood
The French think their oysters are the best!
Charcuterie, Wow😎
Specialty foods, notice the olives are not as prevalent.
Patisserie, can’t pass on dessert 👊
Cafe Au Lait

Don’t know about you, but I need a little coffee after all that drooling.

Basilique Saint Sernin, Mass was under way, so no pictures.

Ok, walking tour says TGC. Toulouse is very pedestrian friendly, except for bicycles, they fly around everywhere! Be careful ✔️

Toulouse bike, everything you need!
Basilique Notre Dame la Daurade

Started in the 800’s and has had many lives as a monastery and gardens of Toulouse. Current version built in the 1600’s. Unbelievably beautiful, my pictures don’t do it justice.

Pont Neuf

Started in the mid 1500’s and completed in 1640 this bridge is still used today. The construction was very difficult because of the swiftness of the Garonne River and the shifting sandy bottom.

TGC is pounding me now, more steps!

Couvent des Jacobins Toulouse

A convent created in 1550. It’s spectacular!

Duck Cassoulet

The regional specialty of the area is Cassoulet, a hearty dish of beans, broth and meats. We love the Duck and sausage version made with rendered duck.

Rendered Duck😬
Le Capitole

The main plaza of the city! And Toulouses city hall.

Ok, TGC has worn me out, 23,000 steps again. But no hills or stairs, a win in my book. Back on the Metro for a quick ride home!

Light French dinner

On to Uzes, France tomorrow, until then,

Av revoir 🥐

1/28/2025 Collioure, France

Collioure from our balcony

Greetings from beautiful and sunny France! It’s a little chilly though! High 60,I think the shorts might go in the suitcase for a while!

Snow capped Pyrenees Mountains.

After a six hour drive up the coast of Spain, we returned to France.

Catalan coast

We discovered this area of France on our last adventure when we were detoured because of a tunnel closure. We hoped to come back and now we are. Let’s explore👍

Walkway around the harbor

Collioure has a long history of going back and forth from France to Spain. It was famous for its anchovy fishing, but now it’s a French and Spanish tourist destination. You do not hear any English here😉

Collioure from the jetty

Our Airbnb is right over the harbor so TGC is ready to go, it could be a long day😬

Chateau Royal de Collioure

First started in 1200, remember the crusaders, the chateau has had many lives and is now a huge tourist attraction.

1/25/2025 Valéncia, Spain

Torres de Quart

Greetings from beautiful, and sunny, 74 degrees Valéncia, Spain!

We made the quick two hour drive from Alicante, Spain to Valencia with no problems and checked in to our Airbnb!

Our Balcony in Valencia

We’ve stayed here previously, and enjoyed the space and the city very much.

Valéncia is a large city with over 1.5 million residents. It has the second largest port on the Mediterranean. Agriculture and tourism are its economic strengths, and it’s a lovely city.

Damage from the Valéncia floods November 2024.

You might remember that in November Valéncia had a terrible flood that killed over 220 people. We drove past this very spot the above picture shows. It’s must have been terrible and tragic. We said our prayers for the residents.🙏🏻

Mercat Central Valéncia

Valéncia is a world renowned food city. It’s located in the bread basket of Spain, and its food and markets are some of the world’s best!

My goodness, it’s a real bakery😜

It’s an easy walk to the market from the Airbnb, 20 minutes and we passed fantastic bakery after fantastic bakery! We must be getting closer to France 😉

First built in 1910, the Central Market in Valencia is fantastic. Let’s take a tour.

Now thats beef!

The market has everything, including gifts and tapas bars!

Of course, Jamon, you’re in Spain!
My bro, the cheese guy! His blue cheese, spectacular!
Assorted nuts…Valéncia folks love nuts!

Well that concludes our time in Spain. We’re heading to France tomorrow🥖

We really, really enjoyed our time in Spain. The people are wonderful, and they love life in Spain. The food is delicious and the scenery spectacular! Hopefully we’ll get to come back!

Sunrise from our balcony, Valéncia, Spain…a magical city😎

1/22/2025 Alicante, Spain

The city of Alicante, with castle above!

Greetings from beautiful, partly sunny and 65 degrees Alicante, Spain.

When we lost our one week stay at the Airbnb in Malaga at the last minute, and moved to Benalmadena, we took two days off the stay and added two days here in Alicante.

Alicante view from our balcony!

We’ve never been to this part of Spain, Costa Blanca, and always wondered what it was like. Let’s find out!

We fired up the Trusty Citroen and away we go!

Spanish countryside as we go over the mountains!

It’s a five hour drive to Alicante from Benalmadena. With the way the highway system works in Spain, even though we’re moving up the coast, we have to drive inland across the Sierra Nevada mountains!

Interesting watching the landscape and climate change as we drive. Starting from Benalmadena, through orange groves, climbing the hills outside of town, then olive trees. As we pass over the top of the Sierra Nevada mountains, then hundreds of kilometers of Walnut trees!

Dropping down into the Costa Blanca, oranges groves and vegetables! Quite interesting!

Snow topped Parque National de Sierra Nevada mountains.

Easy drive to the Airbnb. Two night stay here, so let’s get going!

Alicante tram line

Ok, Alicante has a fantastic Tram line system. Any time I’m riding instead of walking I’m happy 😎

First stop, of course, the Mercado Central de Alicante.

Central market of Alicante

Built in 1921, it’s a fantastic market, busy with locals and tourists even in January. Okay, tour time!

Two levels with everything a chef could want!
Fresh bakery, ten to chose from 😜
Gourmet green olives. I love the green olives stuffed with clams 😜
Fresh Tuna and Fish.
Dozens of smoked fish stalls. This one is smoked Tuna😎
Charcuteria
Green grocery
Butcher shops, over two dozen.
And, of course, Tapas bars, dozens of them.

Fantastic market and extremely busy. Over 350,000 folks live in the metropolitan Alicante area. It’s a happening place.

Cafe con Leche and a croissant. Looking at all that food is making me hungry!

Walking tour time, you know TGC is going to pound the steps today!

Alicante City Hall and plaza
City Hall, which featured Salvador Dali’s artwork.
Passeig Esplanada d’Espanya
Alicante Harbor, located in city center.
Castillo de Santa Barbara

Ok, up to the Castello, thank goodness there’s an elevator!

Wow!

Started in 700 AD by Muslims, the Castello has had many lives! Castello, prison and sanctuary, it’s huge and very, very formidable.

Lots and lots of stairs and ancient cobblestones, my favorites🫣
Wow!
Castillo de Santa Barbara was one of the last areas of contest in the crusades. It’s a very formidable Castillo!
Viva España!
Sunset over the city of Alicante!

Fun visit, 23,000 steps and lots to see and do! Highly recommended city.

We’re off to Valencia today.

Spanish Armada on maneuvers in front of the condo!😆

Adios Amigos!

1/19/2025 Benalmádena and Malaga, Spain, The Costa del Sol

Benalmadena, Spain

Greetings from beautiful Benalmadena, Spain!

As we discussed, we had to Pivot in this next move. Our Airbnb in Rincon de la Victoria, just outside Malaga, cancelled our stay 5 days before our arrival. So, we needed to find a five night stay on very, very short notice!

Patio life, Benalmadena

So, we went on Airbnb and we were lucky enough to find a wonderful space in Benalmadena.

Promenade Benalmadena

It’s a short drive from Estepona to Benalmadena, less than 60 miles. We drove past thousands and thousands of apartments, condos, and villas lining the Costa del Sol on the way here. It’s staggering how many UK people vacation and live here.

Beautiful beaches in the Costa del Sol

It’s funny though, we were looking for a place outside Malaga that had more of a Spanish vibe. Benalmadena is like Florida, Arizona and Mexico rolled into one for the Brits, thousands and thousands of them! Spanish feel, not so much😉

You’d think English is the official language of the Costa del Sol🫣 Bangers and Mash with mushy peas all around 😎

First full day we decided to make the short drive to Malaga and do a little sightseeing!

Churros, chocolate and Cafe with Steamed milk👊

Ok, it’s starting to rain and the lighting is terrible so I’m going to use some pictures from last trip to Malaga.

Malaga Park
Toros de La Malagueta
Malaga Cathedral
Episcopal Palace
Gardens of the Malaga Cathedral
Mercado Central de Atarazanas stained glass mural
The market is divided into three sections, Seafood.
Produce
Spices, and Topas

Moving to Alicante on Tuesday,

Until then , Adios amigos 😎

Delicious and nutritious 🫣

Sunrise Benalmadena!
